Finding a charming home in the Italian hills is becoming increasingly accessible. Last week, we shared that Sambuca di Sicilia is auctioning houses for as low as €3, but there's now an enticing opportunity on mainland Italy.
Specifically, in Tuscany! This picturesque region, known for its vineyards and medieval towns in northern Italy, has introduced a new initiative that could offer up to €30,000 to relocate there.
Tuscany is renowned for its costly real estate, so why are regional authorities offering such incentives? Many hilltop villages are struggling with declining populations as younger generations move to cities for work. Additionally, these areas face challenges managing numerous abandoned properties.
While some Italian locations have auctioned homes for just a few euros, Tuscany’s approach is different. The new program, called ‘Residenzialità in Montagna 2024’ (Residency in the Mountains 2024), offers between €10,000 and €30,000 to those who purchase a house. It’s an appealing opportunity, isn’t it?
According to Stefania Sccardi, Tuscany’s regional vice president, “The Tuscan mountains are areas of exceptional beauty with villages in need of revitalization. Living in these municipalities presents both a challenge and an opportunity, especially for young people looking for a new life.”
What’s the catch? The grant cannot exceed 50% of the cost of the house and its renovation. The property must be in a mountain town with a population of fewer than 5,000. There are many options in Tuscany to consider.
Applicants must be EU citizens or have a residence permit lasting at least 10 years, and must be registered as a resident in an Italian town outside the mountain communities.
While there are some requirements, if they apply to you, consider applying on the Tuscany Region website by 1pm CET on July 27. Those rolling Tuscany hills await you!
