Andrew Garfield and Ryan Reynolds recently reflected on their infamous kiss at the 2017 Golden Globes, which unintentionally stole the spotlight from Ryan Gosling during his Golden Globe win for La La Land. While the kiss was hilarious at the time, the two actors admitted to feeling a bit guilty about the moment, especially considering it overshadowed Gosling's celebration.
In a recent reunion for Variety's Actors on Actors series, Garfield revealed that he later apologized to Gosling for hijacking his moment. "I retrospectively felt a little bit insensitive toward Ryan’s moment," Garfield confessed. Reynolds agreed, adding, "I did too!"
The kiss occurred when Reynolds and Gosling were both nominated in the same category at the Golden Globes for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical, or Comedy. Garfield, who was also nominated that year, came up with the idea to prank Gosling. He jokingly suggested that Reynolds should kiss him instead of his wife, Blake Lively, if he won.
Reynolds, who was laughing at the absurdity of it all, admitted he didn’t actually believe the comment but went along with it anyway. "I’m genuinely a fan of Gosling," Reynolds said, "but we were like, ‘Eh, let’s just do it anyway.’"
Garfield was glad that Reynolds was up for the prank but felt compelled to apologize afterward. "I was able to apologize to Ryan about that, thankfully," Garfield explained. Reynolds, on the other hand, jokingly said that he didn’t apologize but instead “egged his house,” adding, “I didn’t feel so great about losing.”
Despite the prank, Ryan Gosling has shown support for the moment. He later commented, "I’m happy for them," referring to the Reynolds-Garfield kiss, expressing no hard feelings and even poking fun at the whole situation.
In retrospect, Garfield’s playful kiss on Reynolds was about showing his affection regardless of the outcome of the awards. It became a memorable moment that is still talked about today, with Gosling fully supportive of the lighthearted gesture.
