Ryan Murphy is set to continue his Monster anthology series with a new focus on the notorious murderer Ed Gein. Announcing this at the premiere of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story in Los Angeles, Murphy revealed that filming will begin next month, featuring Charlie Hunnam, known for his role in Sons of Anarchy.
Gein, often referred to as the "Butcher of Plainfield," was convicted of one murder in the 1950s but was suspected of several others. His gruesome practices of collecting body parts inspired infamous fictional characters like Norman Bates from Psycho and Buffalo Bill from The Silence of the Lambs. He spent his later years in a mental institution and passed away in 1984.
Charlie Hunnam, who gained fame as Jackson "Jax" Teller on Sons of Anarchy, recently appeared in Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire on Netflix, and has also starred in films such as Pacific Rim, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and Crimson Peak.
The Monster anthology began with Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, featuring Evan Peters as the notorious serial killer. Released in September 2022, the series earned Emmy nominations for both Peters and Richard Jenkins, with Niecy Nash winning for her supporting role as Dahmer's neighbor. Netflix has reported that Dahmer remains its "third most popular English-language series."
The upcoming story about the Menendez brothers, Erik and Lyle, covers their conviction for the murder of their parents in Beverly Hills in 1989. The series stars Nicholas Chavez as Lyle and Cooper Koch as Erik, with Javier Bardem portraying their father José and Chloë Sevigny as their mother Mary Louise "Kitty."
Episodes of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story will be available for streaming on Netflix starting Thursday, September 19.
Additionally, Murphy is set to continue his collaboration with FX this fall. His new horror-drama series, Grotesquerie, featuring Niecy Nash, Lesley Manville, and Travis Kelce, premieres on Wednesday, September 25, and will be available to stream on Hulu the following day.
