At this stage in her illustrious career, Meryl Streep has experienced it all. However, a particular scene in season 3 of Only Murders in the Building with her rumored boyfriend and co-star, Martin Short, brought her to tears, as shared by co-creator John Hoffman.
Streep described filming a romantic scene "at this age" with Short as "the greatest thing ever." Hoffman recalled a memorable night while shooting on a ferry for episode 5, where they worked until around two in the morning on a beautiful Manhattan night. Afterward, Streep, with tears in her eyes, expressed her gratitude to Hoffman, saying, “I just had to wait here for you to get off the boat to say thank you. I got to play a scene I really thought I wouldn’t have a chance to do. To play romantic scenes at this age with this band in this way, it’s just the greatest thing ever.”
Hoffman reflected on this moment as one of the most fulfilling experiences, hoping audiences would fall in love with Streep and Short's on-screen couple as much as the cast did.
In season 3, Streep joined the Emmy-winning comedy as Loretta, a once-aspiring theater actress who finally gets her big break in Short's character Oliver Putnam's show. Their romance develops, but Loretta soon becomes a suspect in a murder case. Streep has also returned as a recurring guest in the fourth season, where her character and Oliver are expected to marry in the finale.
Off-screen, rumors of a romantic relationship between Short and Streep have surfaced, although neither has publicly confirmed anything. Short previously referred to Streep as "just very close friends" after their appearance at the Golden Globes in January. Despite this, the speculation surrounding their relationship continues to thrive, much like Loretta and Oliver’s story.
