The upcoming movie Thunderbolts (yes, the asterisk is part of the official title) has a new extended trailer that goes beyond the usual movie preview. The footage focuses on how Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ava Starr/Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Red Guardian/Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) all come together.
It turns out someone is targeting them, and Yelena suspects it's because they're all seen as liabilities due to their shady pasts. "Everyone here has done bad things: shadow ops, robbing government labs, contract kills," Yelena explains. "So someone wants us gone."
At first, each of these antiheroes believes the others are out to kill them, leading to initial chaos when they meet at a secret facility. But the situation takes a turn when Bob (played by Lewis Pullman, possibly portraying the comic character Sentry) enters the room. He's at least bulletproof, and his appearance shifts the group's focus.
Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus), a character with a morally gray outlook, adds, "We're taught to think in terms of good guys and bad guys, but eventually, you learn there are bad guys and even worse guys, and that's it."
The trailer mixes serious moments with lighthearted ones, like Bucky pulling his vibranium arm out of the dishwasher, and an awkward reunion between Yelena and Alexei after the events of Black Widow. There’s also some humor when John Walker and Red Guardian end up in the same vehicle, chased by the Winter Soldier.
Thunderbolts, directed by Jake Schreier, is set to hit theaters on May 2, 2025.
