Daniel Day-Lewis is considered one of the finest actors of his time, holding the unique distinction of winning three Best Actor Oscars. After his last film, Phantom Thread, in 2017, he announced his intention to retire, but now he is set to make a comeback. Day-Lewis will star in his son Ronan Day-Lewis’s directorial debut, titled Anemone.
Focus Features and Plan B are collaborating on this project, which they announced on Tuesday. The father-son duo co-wrote the screenplay, which, as stated in a press release, "delves into the complex relationships among fathers, sons, and brothers, highlighting familial bonds."
Joining Day-Lewis in the film are notable actors such as Sean Bean (known for The Lord of the Rings), Samantha Morton (The Serpent Queen), Samuel Bottomley (How to Have Sex), and Safia Oakley-Green (She Said).
Before the release of Phantom Thread, Day-Lewis expressed his desire to retire. He had previously stepped away from acting from 1997 to 2000. Earlier this year, he made a rare public appearance to honor director Martin Scorsese, who hinted that there might be room for "one more" film.
Peter Kujawski, Chairman of Focus Features, expressed excitement about working with Ronan Day-Lewis, praising him as a brilliant visual artist. He noted that they have crafted an outstanding script and are eager to share their vision with audiences alongside Plan B.
Ronan Day-Lewis has established himself as a respected artist, particularly in the visual arts.
The elder Day-Lewis has often explored themes of father-son relationships in his work. His Oscar-winning roles in Lincoln and There Will Be Blood prominently feature these themes. He also experienced a breakdown during a performance of Hamlet in 1989, attributing it to the emotional impact of portraying his father's ghost on stage.
Further details about the film, including a potential release date, will be revealed soon.
