“Deadpool & Wolverine” surpasses $1 billion globally, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film and the 11th MCU movie to reach this milestone.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” has joined the elite billion-dollar club.

Disney’s latest Marvel sequel, featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has earned $494.3 million in North America and $535.1 million internationally, totaling $1.029 billion globally. This makes it the second film of 2024 to reach this milestone, following Pixar’s “Inside Out 2”, which has earned $1.558 billion.

The film is on track to surpass 2019’s “Joker”, which made $1.07 billion and currently holds the record for the highest-grossing R-rated film. Deadpool & Wolverine is the 31st Disney film and the 11th Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie to cross the $1 billion mark. This success comes as a significant boost for the MCU, which has recently faced challenges with films like “Eternals”, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”, and “The Marvels”. Despite near misses from post-pandemic films such as “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” ($956 million), “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” ($859 million), and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” ($846 million), Deadpool & Wolverine is only the second MCU film to achieve this feat since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame”. Sony’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” was the first to hit $1.9 billion in 2021.

Directed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool & Wolverine marks the first MCU film featuring characters that were previously under 20th Century Fox. Reynolds and Levy brought together a lineup of Fox-era heroes, including Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Chris Evans as Human Torch from Fantastic Four, and Wesley Snipes as Blade, for a timeline-saving adventure.
