Disney World is set to revamp its Finding Nemo attraction at Epcot by removing all live dolphins starting in October. The beloved exhibit, originally known as The Living Seas, has been part of Epcot's lineup for nearly 20 years since it was updated to feature the Finding Nemo theme.
According to an internal memo from Disney, which was shared with Entertainment Weekly, the company plans to move three dolphins to the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park in Florida. This park is accredited by both the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks & Aquariums and the International Marine Animals Trainer's Association. The decision follows a detailed evaluation to ensure the dolphins' well-being as The Seas undergoes infrastructure changes.
In addition to the dolphin move, Lou, Epcot's well-known manatee, will be transferred to a new rehabilitation center on September 11. Another manatee will join Lil Joe, another of Epcot's cherished aquatic animals, who will remain at the attraction. Disney is committed to supporting manatee conservation efforts, especially given the recent declines in their population in Florida.
Disney has assured that despite the impact on Epcot's DiveQuest experiences, existing guest reservations will be honored through October 19, with DiveQuest expected to resume in 2025.
The Living Seas originally opened in 1986 as an aquarium and ride experience and was later rebranded as The Seas with Nemo & Friends in 2005 following the success of the Finding Nemo film. Disney World continues to expand and update its offerings, including new attractions based on Frozen, Ratatouille, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Moana. Future plans also include new developments announced at D23 in August, such as a new Magic Kingdom land themed around Disney villains and an Indiana Jones-themed upgrade to the Animal Kingdom's Dinosaur ride.
