Prepare to don your togas, strap on your sandals, and hop into the chariot — we're heading back to the arena.
The first trailer for Ridley Scott's highly anticipated sequel, Gladiator II, gives fans an exciting preview of the epic battles and dramatic moments that await. Set more than 20 years after the events of the original 2000 film starring Russell Crowe, this sequel promises to deliver the historical grandeur of its predecessor.
The trailer introduces Paul Mescal as a grown-up Lucius, the nephew of the deceased Commodus (played by Joaquin Phoenix) and the son of Lucilla (reprising her role, Connie Nielsen). Following the events of the first movie, Lucius was sent by his mother to live in northern Africa to escape the corruption and violence of Rome. Now an adult, he is pulled back into Roman life and the arena when General Marcus Acacius (portrayed by Pedro Pascal) invades his home in Numidia and takes him prisoner.
The trailer also features Denzel Washington as Macrinus, a wealthy arms dealer who uses gladiators for sport. It introduces the film’s primary antagonists: the megalomaniacal twin emperors Caracalla (played by Fred Hechinger) and Geta (played by Joseph Quinn).
Returning cast member Derek Jacobi reprises his role as Gracchus. The cast is rounded out by May Calamawy (Moon Knight, Ramy), Lior Raz (Operation Finale), Peter Mensah (Avatar), and Matt Lucas (Wonka, Bridesmaids), among others.
Ridley Scott is back as the director, with key contributors from the original Gladiator returning, including cinematographer John Mathieson, production designer Arthur Max, and costume designer Janty Yates. The screenplay is crafted by David Scarpa and Peter Craig, with Scarpa and Craig also developing the story.
