Andrew Garfield recently reflected on a serious allergic reaction that sent him to the hospital while filming Never Let Me Go. In a video for Esquire, the star of We Live in Time shared memories of working with Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley on the poignant 2010 sci-fi romance film, revealing that they were by his side during his medical emergency.
“We had a lot of fun,” Garfield recalled about the film's shoot. “But one night, while having dinner together at our hotel, I had a really severe allergic reaction to something.” He humorously added, “I had to go to the hospital with two of the most talented, beautiful British actresses. That’s a classic Garf move.”
Based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2005 novel, Never Let Me Go features Garfield, Mulligan, and Knightley as Tommy, Kathy, and Ruth—three childhood friends raised to have their organs harvested for others. The story explores their complex love triangle and confrontations with mortality.
This wasn't Garfield's first allergy scare on set. His Under the Silver Lake co-star Riley Keough revealed last year that she accidentally caused a shutdown of the filming when she consumed a peanut-filled granola bar just before their kissing scene. “The producer had to come in and shut down the set because Andrew is highly allergic to peanuts,” she explained, expressing her shock at the situation.
Keough remarked, “Thank goodness someone caught it, because I had no idea!”
Garfield also discussed Never Let Me Go and his return as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home in the video clip.
