Lewis Hamilton praises Ralf Schumacher for coming out as gay, highlighting the need for more inclusivity in Formula One and sports at large.

Seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton has praised Ralf Schumacher after the former F1 driver publicly came out as gay on Monday. Schumacher, who is the younger brother of seven-time champion Michael Schumacher, shared a photo with his partner on Instagram. The partner, later identified as Etienne by German actress Carmen Geiss, is someone Schumacher referred to as the “right partner” in his life.

Previously married to Cora Schumacher and a father to a son named David, the 49-year-old Schumacher had an 11-year F1 career with teams like Jordan, Williams, and Toyota, winning six races. His revelation makes him only the second F1 driver to come out publicly. Hamilton commended Schumacher’s bravery, calling it a “positive message” and an encouragement for others to follow suit.

Schumacher now works as an F1 pundit for Sky Germany.

Hamilton, known for his advocacy of LGBTQ rights, has been recognized for wearing a helmet adorned with the Pride flag during races, including those in Qatar and Saudi Arabia. He emphasized that Formula One must do more to be truly inclusive and to ensure people feel comfortable in the sport. Hamilton pointed out that while the sport claims inclusivity, it still has significant work to do, especially in making the environment more welcoming for all, including women, who have historically faced challenges in this male-dominated space.
