Patrick Dempsey and Sarah Michelle Gellar have undergone a dramatic makeover for Dexter: Original Sin. Entertainment Weekly presents an exclusive first look at their transformation into '90s Miami police officers for this Dexter prequel series.
The series is set in 1991 Miami, 15 years before the events of the original Dexter series. It explores the life of a young Dexter, now played by Patrick Gibson (taking over from Michael C. Hall), before he became the notorious serial killer. Dexter, struggling with his dark urges, receives guidance from his father Harry, portrayed by Christian Slater (replacing James Remar), who helps him follow a code to manage his impulses while keeping his younger sister, played by Molly Brown, unaware.
The initial photos from EW reveal Dempsey sporting a mustache and slicked-back hairstyle as Captain Aaron Spencer, the head of the Miami Metro Police Department’s homicide unit. Meanwhile, Gellar is seen in shoulder pads as Tanya Martin, the Chief of CSI. Both actors have embraced the bold fashion and hairstyles of the early '90s. Dempsey’s mustache, inspired by vintage Miami police footage, and Gellar’s shoulder pads and heavy makeup reflect the era's distinctive style.
Dempsey, thrilled by his physical transformation, views it as a unique opportunity to reinvent himself. He believes that changing his appearance helps him fully engage with his role and make a memorable impact. Gellar, on the other hand, finds her role as Tanya Martin offers both comedic elements and serious depth. She enjoys portraying a determined and resilient character in a predominantly male profession in the early '90s.
The real-life friendship between Dempsey and Slater mirrors their on-screen connection, having previously worked together on the 1991 film Mobsters. Dempsey reflects on their careers with humor, while Gellar expresses excitement about working with Dempsey and Slater, calling it a fulfillment of her teenage dreams.
As the series introduces new characters, there’s always the possibility they might cross paths with Dexter’s darker side. Dempsey hints that although he’s committed to just one season, the show’s unpredictability means anything can happen. Gellar jokes about the inherent risks of being involved in a show like Dexter, where even secondary characters can become victims.
Both actors often discuss the pressures of being central characters. Dempsey appreciates the ensemble nature of the show, while Gellar enjoys not having the weight of the title character on her shoulders.
