George Lopez announces his retirement from stand-up comedy after decades. His final special, part of his comedy tour, will air on Amazon Prime Video.

The world of stand-up comedy is losing one of its most prominent figures. George Lopez, a celebrated comedian over the past fifty years, announced his retirement from stand-up. In a clip from Tamron Hall's talk show, which premiered on Deadline, Lopez stated that his upcoming comedy special for Amazon's Prime Video would be "the last one." He humorously remarked, "I’ve subjected the American people to enough of my crap."

Lopez reflected on his decision, saying, "It seems like the right time. It’s been the one thing that has just never left me my whole life, and it’s a wonderful place to leave it at this particular point.”

On Hall's show, Lopez was accompanied by his daughter Mayan, with whom he stars in the NBC comedy Lopez vs. Lopez. He expressed his desire to spend more time with her, saying, "I want to spend more time with her," while affectionately rubbing her shoulder.

The forthcoming special, which was filmed at Los Angeles' Dolby Theater on September 27 and 28, is part of Lopez's ALLLRIIIIGHHTTT! Comedy tour. His last special, We'll Do It for Half, was released by Netflix in 2020. Lopez has also been featured in several other specials, including America’s Mexican, Tall, Dark, and Chicano, It’s Not Me, It’s You, and The Wall for HBO.

Starting his career in the 1980s, Lopez gained recognition through appearances on late-night shows like The Arsenio Hall Show and The Johnny Carson Show. He expressed a desire for his own show, similar to Jerry Seinfeld or Roseanne Barr, to ensure better representation of Latinos in television. This led to the creation of the groundbreaking sitcom George Lopez, which aired for six seasons on ABC and won a Creative Arts Emmy in 2005. He also made history as the first Mexican American host of an English-language late-night show with Lopez Tonight, which debuted on TBS in 2009.

The third season of Lopez vs. Lopez is set to premiere on October 18. In the show, Lopez plays a character named George Lopez, a moving company owner who is forced to live with his daughter after declaring bankruptcy. The cast includes notable actors like Al Madrigal, Caroline Rhea, and Rita Moreno, along with guest appearances from stars like Harvey Guillén, Snoop Dogg, and Scheana Shay from Vanderpump Rules.
