Join Ted Danson as he reminisces about his iconic partnership with Shelley Long on Cheers, reflecting on their dynamic and the show's lasting legacy.

Ted Danson recently celebrated his former Cheers co-star Shelley Long, reflecting on their time together more than 37 years after her exit from the acclaimed sitcom. Danson, who portrayed Sam Malone, a charming yet flawed bartender and ex-baseball player, often found himself in a complicated, love-hate dynamic with Long's character, Diane Chambers.

During a September 9 episode of the podcast SmartLess, Danson shared his thoughts on working with Long, saying, "It was great." He candidly recalled his initial impression during auditions: "Oh, no. No. That's a bad, bad idea." He noted their contrasting styles and approaches made their partnership work, describing it as "this fair fight."

The characters’ on-again, off-again romance came to an end when Diane left the show to pursue her writing career at the conclusion of the fifth season. In reality, Long departed Cheers in 1987 to focus on films and family.

Danson reflected on their off-screen relationship, stating, "It was hard for us sometimes to be in a room together, but when we started working, it was just fantastic." He highlighted their playful interactions, saying, "You'd smack her, and she'd smack you back harder. She was brilliant."

He also acknowledged Long's impact on his career, crediting her with helping him secure the role that earned him Emmy awards in 1990 and 1993: "I think I got Cheers because of Shelley Long; she really nailed that part."

Danson remained with the show for all 11 seasons. After Long's departure, Kirstie Alley stepped in as Rebecca Howe. Although the show continued to thrive, there was uncertainty about how audiences would react to Alley. Danson admitted in June 2023 that he had doubts about the change, saying, "I certainly was worried... Oh, I just lost my dance partner, Shelley. So will this even work?" However, he later praised Alley, calling her "the funniest person."
