The team behind 9-1-1: Lone Star was deep into planning for season 5 when they learned that actress Sierra McClain would not reprise her role as 911 dispatcher Grace. As the team scrambled to adjust their storyline, co-showrunner Rashad Raisani had a clear objective: keep the door open for Grace’s potential return. He emphasized the importance of protecting her character, noting, “We have to explain her absence, given how dedicated she is to her family and community.”
To address Grace's absence, Raisani collaborated with actor Jim Parrack, who plays Judd, Grace’s husband. He wanted to avoid simply killing off her character without closure. Instead, they decided that Grace would join Mercy Ships, a real-life nonprofit that provides medical care worldwide, particularly to children. Raisani felt this was a fitting reason for Grace to leave her family, aligning with her character’s higher calling established from the beginning.
Raisani also aimed to place Judd in a challenging situation, portraying him as feeling frustrated and alone due to Grace’s commitment to her noble cause. While Judd might not openly express anger, he grapples with the complexities of his new reality. Meanwhile, Judd has quit his firefighting job to care for their son, Wyatt, who was injured last season, leaving him without a job and focused on making their home accessible.
In the season 5 premiere, viewers see Judd working on a home renovation to accommodate Wyatt’s needs. However, his path back to being a lieutenant at the 126 isn’t straightforward, as Owen is caught in choosing between two other candidates, Marjan and Paul.
Raisani shared a poignant quote: “The sacrifice is what gives something meaning.” He explained that Judd’s sacrifice for Wyatt would have lasting consequences, preventing a quick return to normalcy. As the season unfolds, viewers can expect the effects of this sacrifice to resonate throughout the storyline, hinting that nothing will revert to how it once was.
9-1-1: Lone Star season 5 airs on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
