Robert Pattinson's upcoming film features him in a unique role where he plays a character named Mickey who undergoes a process of being "reprinted" repeatedly while exploring a perilous alien planet. The first trailer for Mickey 17 reveals that every time Mickey dies, a new version is created, retaining the memories of his previous selves. Throughout the trailer, viewers witness Mickey facing various fatal situations, such as drowning in icy waters, falling into a frozen ravine, and being shot.
The trailer raises the question, "Hey Mickey, what's it like to die?" to which Mickey struggles to provide a clear answer despite his numerous experiences with death. He admits, "Even on my 17th go around, I hate dying." In a humorous moment, when asked if he’s feeling dizzy, he responds just before his hand is severed by space debris, floating past other travelers who seem unfazed.
Adapted from Edward Ashton’s sci-fi novel Mickey7, Mickey 17 marks the return of acclaimed director Bong Joon Ho, following his Oscar-winning film Parasite. This film features an international cast including Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, Naomi Ackie, and Toni Collette, and revisits the sci-fi genre previously explored by Bong in Snowpiercer.
The title change from Mickey7 to Mickey 17 indicates the number of times Mickey, classified as an "Expendable," has died and been recreated. Bong humorously noted at CinemaCon that he "kills him 10 times more." Pattinson hinted that there may be even more reprints than just 17, describing Mickey 17 as having very low expectations for his life while facing relentless challenges.
Pattinson, who gained fame as Edward Cullen in the Twilight series, returned to major films with The Batman in 2022 and is set to reprise that role in a sequel slated for 2026. Yet, he remains drawn to unique projects like Mickey 17, praising Bong as his hero and calling the script bizarre and humorous.
Mickey 17 is scheduled to release in theaters on January 31, 2025. Watch the trailer for a sneak peek into this intriguing sci-fi adventure.
