Marvel's Ironheart series is setting its sights on Chicago, marking a new chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In an update from the D23 2024 event, stars Dominique Thorne, Anthony Ramos, Alden Ehrenreich, Regan Aliyah, and Lyric Ross shared insights about the series, revealing that Chicago will play a crucial role in the storyline.
According to Thorne, who reprises her role from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as Riri Williams, the series will delve deeper into her character’s background and personal growth. "We’re exploring her origins more, and seeing how her experiences are shaping her views and decisions," Thorne explains.
Riri, who is an engineering prodigy from Chicago, was last seen returning to MIT after the tragic death of Queen Ramonda. In Ironheart, she returns to her hometown, setting the stage for a conflict where she contemplates how to use her remarkable skills and knowledge.
Ramos, playing Parker Robbins (also known as the Hood), notes that the series will explore the characters' complex motivations and interactions. “The show highlights how each character's ambition and desires affect their relationships, both positively and negatively," Ramos adds.
Regan Aliyah hints that her character will have intricate relationships with others, while Alden Ehrenreich appreciates the series' focus on nuanced characters, noting that it offers a "psychological, emotional portrait" of everyone involved.
Chicago itself becomes a significant character in the show. Ramos reveals that his character’s backstory was altered from the comics to reflect a Chicagoan origin, adding depth to his narrative. The city, particularly Humboldt Park with its vibrant Puerto Rican community, plays a vital role in the show's setting and character identities.
Ironheart is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2025, bringing a fresh perspective to the MCU with its rich Chicago backdrop.
