Christine Baranski is excited about the possibility of reprising her role in a new installment of the Mamma Mia franchise. The Emmy-winning actress recently hinted that a third film might be in development. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Baranski shared that she has hope for Mamma Mia 3 after discussing the project with Judy Craymer, the producer of the franchise, in London. Craymer provided Baranski with details about the potential plot for the upcoming movie.
Baranski confirmed that Craymer is indeed working on Mamma Mia 3 and has outlined the narrative for the new film. “That’s all I can say! But, it’s not like, 'Oh, I wish it could happen!' Judy Craymer makes things happen,” Baranski remarked. She mentioned the successful return of the cast from the previous films, including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters, Dominic Cooper, Andy Garcia, and Cher.
The first two Mamma Mia films, which premiered in 2008 and 2018, were huge box office successes, earning $695 million and $402 million globally, respectively. Baranski enjoyed her time working on these films, which are known for their upbeat ABBA music and joyful themes. She noted the film's ability to bring happiness to audiences and mentioned how many fans, especially young girls in Europe, adore her character Tanya.
Baranski also touched on the cultural impact of the films and humorously suggested that even Kamala Harris might use one of the ABBA songs. The original Mamma Mia film, adapted from the stage musical, revolves around Sophie (played by Seyfried) inviting three potential fathers (Brosnan, Firth, Skarsgård) to her wedding to figure out which one is her dad. Baranski's character, Tanya, was part of the supporting cast and performed alongside Donna (Streep) in the Donna and the Dynamos musical group.
