DJ Qualls recently shared his experience of coming out, revealing that overhearing homophobic comments on set motivated him to share his sexuality with his colleagues. Although he has been out since he was about 18 or 19, he felt unable to be open in Hollywood until 2015 due to the prevailing attitudes at the time.
During an episode of Michael Rosenbaum's podcast, Qualls recounted his first press junket, where a well-known director-producer told Seann William Scott that he nearly didn’t hire him because he suspected he was gay. This attitude influenced Qualls, who initially didn’t want to confront such negativity at work. However, he realized he shouldn’t have to endure homophobic remarks while simply trying to go about his day. Qualls emphasized that while he wouldn’t publicly correct someone, he would privately inform them of his identity, saying, “Hey, I’m gay.”
He expressed the importance of owning his space at work, noting that he was hired for his talent and deserved respect. Qualls pointed out that while he doesn't see himself as the "thought police," constant use of slurs made him uncomfortable, especially in casual settings like the craft service area.
Qualls officially came out after appearing on Comedy Central's The Jim Jefferies Show in 2020, confirming on social media that he had been gay all along and was tired of worrying about others’ opinions regarding his career. He is recognized for his roles in Road Trip and The Core, as well as for his appearances on Breaking Bad, Scrubs, and notably, Supernatural, where he played Garth Fitzgerald. He drew parallels between Garth’s struggles and his own coming out journey, stating that Garth, like him, felt like an outsider who longs for acceptance.
Reflecting on his past, Qualls shared that he faced discouragement in the industry regarding being himself, which made his journey difficult. However, he noted that society has changed significantly, creating a more accepting environment.
In May, Qualls revealed that he is engaged to Ty Olsson, a fellow actor from Supernatural, whom he met at a fan convention.
