The era of generative AI gadgets has been underwhelming so far, with devices like Humane’s AI Pin and the Rabbit R1 failing to meet expectations and succumbing to their own hype. Despite this, generative AI holds promise for consumer hardware, particularly as technology evolves on devices like handsets and headphones. Google’s latest effort, the Pixel Buds Pro 2, was revealed at the Made By Google Event and represents a significant step forward.
These new earbuds come a little over two years after the original model. Google is focusing on its generative AI capabilities, particularly the Gemini Live conversational assistant. According to Google, with Gemini Live in the earbuds, users can engage in a genuine two-way conversation with an AI assistant. This feature allows for more interactive and thoughtful exchanges, even when the phone is in the pocket.
The introduction of Gemini Live in the Pixel Buds Pro 2 may finally address the longstanding issue of natural language interaction that has hindered the broader adoption of smart assistants. The earbuds utilize the Tensor A1 chip, marking Google’s first application of its mobile chip technology in this product line. This chip has enabled a 27% reduction in the earbuds' size, enhanced processing speed, and improved battery life to 12 hours for the earbuds alone and 48 hours with the charging case.
Additionally, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 feature Silent Seal passive noise canceling and advanced active noise-canceling capabilities, promising to eliminate up to twice as much noise as previous models. The earbuds also support Google’s Find My Device feature, which helps locate lost earbuds and their charging case. Priced at $229, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 will start shipping on September 26.
