Google Takes Pixel Fold Seriously in Latest Update

As the Google event for the latest Pixel phones approaches, it's clear that exciting updates are on the way. Google has already announced that the new Pixel Fold will now be known as the "Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold". This new name might seem like a mouthful, but it signals something significant.

Why Not Pixel Fold 2?

It's interesting that instead of naming it Pixel Fold 2, Google has chosen to brand it as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. This name change suggests that Google wants to emphasize the new Pixel Fold as a serious and noteworthy device, unlike its predecessor.

Last year’s Pixel Fold was launched in early summer with a price tag of $1,799. However, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro were only released in October. Later, a major feature drop in December, which included advanced AI features with Gemini, was only available for the Pixel 8 Pro. The Pixel Fold missed out on these updates, which was frustrating for early adopters who paid a premium for the foldable phone.

Google likely noticed this and wants to avoid similar issues with the new Pixel 9 Pro Fold. By rebranding the foldable phone, Google aims to ensure that this device receives the attention and updates it deserves.

A True Flagship This Time

The original Pixel Fold launched with the Tensor G2 chip, while the newer Pixel 8 series featured the upgraded Tensor G3. This mismatch created confusion for buyers who had to choose between a high-priced foldable phone with older technology and a flagship phone with the latest hardware.

With the upcoming Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Google is addressing this by launching all Pixel 9 devices simultaneously. This means that the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will also feature the latest Tensor G4 chip, aligning it with the other Pixel 9 models and removing the need for compromises.

Additionally, it raises questions about whether the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold will share the same camera features. We’ll find out soon enough.
