Hollywood video game voice actors and motion-capture performers strike for better pay, AI protections, and improved working conditions amid stalled negotiations.

Video game voice actors and motion-capture performers have initiated a strike following a breakdown in labor contract negotiations with a focus on AI-related worker protections, marking a new work stoppage in Hollywood.

The SAG-AFTRA union announced the strike for the Interactive Media Agreement, effective July 26. This decision came after prolonged discussions with major video game companies like Activision Productions, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, Take-Two Interactive, Disney Character Voices, and Warner Bros Discovery’s WB Games.

The Interactive Media Agreement, which lapsed in November 2022, was extended month-to-month during negotiations. The union expressed frustration that despite agreements on many issues, employers did not commit to protecting performers under AI terms in clear, enforceable language.

SAG-AFTRA, which also represents film and TV actors who struck in July of the previous year over AI safeguards, is now overseeing two concurrent work stoppages in Hollywood for the first time in 63 years.

Key concerns in the negotiations include higher wages, medical benefits, and breaks for motion-capture performers who use sensors or suits for game development. The union argues that pay has not kept up with inflation and seeks better protection for these workers.

Audrey Cooling, a spokesperson for the video game producers, expressed disappointment over the union's walkout, noting that they were close to a deal and had reached consensus on 24 out of 25 proposals, including significant wage increases and enhanced safety measures. The proposal also included AI protections requiring consent and fair compensation for all performers under the Interactive Media Agreement.
