Kevin Costner's 'Horizon' sequel delayed to boost audience for the first film. Epic western saga faces release schedule change. Discover more on our blog!

The upcoming film in Kevin Costner's ambitious western franchise has been delayed. The sequel to the currently showing "Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1" was initially set for release on August 16. However, a spokesperson for New Line Cinema informed CNN that this is no longer the case.

The reason for the delay is to provide audiences more time to experience the first installment of "Horizon," available in theaters, on PVOD, and the streaming platform MAX.

The spokesperson expressed gratitude towards exhibition partners for their support, allowing viewers across the US to enjoy the movie during its theatrical run.

"Horizon: An American Saga" premiered on June 28 and is distributed by Warner Bros., part of Warner Bros. Discovery like CNN. The film has earned under $23.5 million globally so far.

This multi-film series is a passion project for Costner, who co-wrote, produced, directed, and starred in the epic western set around the American Civil War era. In a pre-release interview with CNN, the Oscar winner shared that he had been working on getting the film made for decades. He was not worried about the lengthy runtime or multiple installments potentially deterring viewers with shorter attention spans.

"I make movies so people won't be bored," Costner explained. "I offer something a bit different, which is why it's sometimes hard to get them made initially—they're a little unique."

Costner has reportedly invested $38 million of his own money into the project. He confirmed to CNN that he is already working on a third film in the planned four-movie series.
