Sheryl Lee Ralph transforms her role in 'The Fabulous Four,' advocating for a positive portrayal. Learn about her impactful changes and reflections.

While working on her new film, The Fabulous Four, Sheryl Lee Ralph was reminded of a vital lesson: always have confidence in oneself and follow one’s instincts.

Ralph reflected on her experience with the film, sharing with Entertainment Weekly, “Sometimes, you might think you know what you’re doing, but this project made me realize that I truly understand this industry.”

She was referring to the significant changes she proposed for her character, Kitty. The film, a bold comedy, features Ralph alongside Susan Sarandon and Megan Mullally as three lifelong friends who travel to Key West for a surprise wedding of their college friend, Marilyn (portrayed by Bette Midler).

Originally, Kitty’s role was to be a petty drug dealer, but Ralph pushed for a reimagining of the character. Concerned about reinforcing negative stereotypes, she suggested transforming Kitty into a botanist specializing in cannabis. This new version of Kitty would develop a successful line of Miss Kitty’s Edibles with her grandson. Ralph’s idea was embraced and greatly improved the character’s portrayal.

Ralph also advocated for changes involving Kitty’s grandson, Nathan (played by Kadan Well Bennett). Nathan, a young gay Black man, had left his unsupportive home and secretly worked at a strip club in Key West. The film added a touching scene where Nathan reconciles with his mother (played by Brandee Evans), which was not part of the original script. Ralph emphasized the importance of treating this storyline with respect, given the struggles faced by many young Black men and other marginalized individuals. “We need to give this relationship the respect it deserves,” she said. The filmmakers were receptive to this change, which Ralph found deeply fulfilling.

Director Jocelyn Moorhouse praised Ralph’s creative contributions, explaining that the character of Kitty evolved from an organic farmer suggested by Sissy Spacek, who was originally cast. After Spacek’s injury, Ralph was brought in and proposed Kitty as a certified horticulturist with a small business. Other changes included transforming Kitty’s daughter into a born-again Christian cult member. Moorhouse valued the input from Ralph and the other actresses, which significantly enhanced the film.

Ultimately, Ralph found the experience of pitching and seeing her ideas come to life both positive and rewarding. "They were very open to my suggestions, and I’m thrilled with the outcome. I think this film could be a summer hit, and I’m excited about it," she concluded.
