Discover Michael Mann's new film "Ferrari," featuring Penélope Cruz as Laura Ferrari. Dive into her impactful role and the story behind the iconic Italian brand.

In the promotional materials for Michael Mann’s latest film, his first in eight years, the name Ferrari stands out prominently in red. This might lead viewers to assume that the film focuses solely on Enzo Ferrari, the Italian car manufacturer. However, the film also places significant emphasis on Laura Ferrari, Enzo’s wife, portrayed by Oscar-winner Penélope Cruz in a compelling role.

When Ferrari begins, Laura is grappling with the recent death of their son, Dino, and is unaware that Enzo has fathered a child with his mistress, Lina Lardi, played by Shailene Woodley. Both Cruz and Mann were determined to make Laura a crucial part of the story. Despite filming in Modena, Italy—the city where the Ferraris once lived—there was little information available about Laura.

Cruz reveals, “Nobody knew about Laura. We had to research extensively, even talking to strangers, because there was minimal written material on her. There were no videos or recordings.” Much of what Cruz learned was negative, describing Laura as "crazy," "difficult," and a "witch." Determined to uncover the truth, Cruz and Mann worked to present Laura's story more authentically.

Laura Ferrari’s role was pivotal from the start; she was involved in the company’s early struggles, even pawning a wedding gift to provide essential funds—an act that Enzo never forgot. Cruz explains that Laura’s challenging personality was shaped by her profound personal loss and daily struggles, which resonate with many women facing similar situations today.

Mann noted that Cruz's portrayal of Laura has resonated particularly with female viewers, especially those over 30. He described Cruz’s performance as incredibly powerful, drawing on her life experiences and empathy. “There’s a connection among women who have endured hardships and loss,” Mann said, “and Laura's character speaks to them in a special way.”

Eventually, some residents of Modena assisted Cruz in understanding Laura better by providing valuable historical documents, including private love letters between Enzo and Laura. These documents proved essential for Cruz in capturing the depth of their relationship.

Ferrari is set to premiere on December 25.
