Kelly Ripa celebrated her 54th birthday by honoring a remarkable woman who profoundly influenced her son, Joaquin Consuelos. During the opening of Wednesday's episode of Live, Ripa, alongside her husband Mark Consuelos, initially shared joyful birthday sentiments. However, she soon became emotional while paying tribute to Yvette Siegel-Herzog, a teacher who significantly redirected Joaquin's educational journey before her passing at the age of 100.
Ripa expressed, “Sometimes, someone enters your life and changes it in ways that are hard to appreciate at first. But years later, you realize just how much that person has impacted your family.” Tears filled her eyes as she acknowledged Siegel-Herzog's work with the Stephen Gaynor School, which specializes in supporting children with language-based learning disabilities.
Ripa revealed that Joaquin attended the school until 8th grade after she had approached Siegel-Herzog in a distressed state regarding her son’s education. “I remember crying in her office. She was an enlightening and empowering figure for us,” Ripa recalled, sharing a touching photo of Siegel-Herzog hugging Joaquin at his graduation.
“She lived a fulfilling life and passed away yesterday at 100,” Ripa said, noting that Joaquin is now a college student in Michigan with impressive grades, thanks to Siegel-Herzog’s influence. “I was heartbroken yesterday; I really didn’t want to come to work today. I think of all the generations of kids she has inspired and how much they love learning because of her. I am grateful for her legacy, which will continue on.”
Siegel-Herzog’s obituary described her as a “visionary educator” in New York City, recognizing her contributions to both teachers and students. It highlighted her pioneering role in the field of education, stating, “Yvette was a trailblazer whose vision and passion for helping children with learning differences shaped the mission of the Stephen Gaynor School and transformed the lives of thousands of families.” Along with her close friend Dr. Miriam Michael, Siegel-Herzog co-founded the school in 1962, advocating for a nurturing and individualized approach to education for bright students who learn differently.
