A spokesperson from the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department revealed to Entertainment Weekly that Waring’s death resulted from the combined effects of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and olanzapine, an antipsychotic medication often prescribed for conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The ruling for his death has been classified as accidental.
In a deeply emotional Instagram update on April 6, Peterson shared her heartbreak: “It is with immense sorrow that I inform you of my precious Josh’s departure on Easter Sunday. No one can truly prepare for the overwhelming grief of losing someone so close. Every fiber of my being aches with the loss. Josh fought valiantly throughout his adult life, but this past Sunday, the challenge proved insurmountable.”
Waring's struggles with substance abuse were well-documented. In 2022, he faced legal trouble with felony and multiple misdemeanor drug charges, ultimately entering a guilty plea. Prior to that, in 2016, he was sentenced to prison for attempted murder but was released after serving four years.
In her heartfelt post, Peterson candidly discussed the difficulties her son faced: “Many people may not fully grasp the struggles of those with substance abuse disorder, but I am profoundly grateful for the compassion and support you have shown Josh throughout his battles,” she expressed. “I also want to thank everyone who has stood by me during this painful journey, sharing their own experiences with addiction and the grief of losing loved ones to such illness.”
Waring is survived by his young daughter, Kennady, who now carries on in his memory.
Peterson has continued to honor her son’s memory by speaking openly about his struggles, hoping to shed light on the broader issues surrounding addiction and mental health. Her ongoing efforts highlight the importance of understanding and support for those dealing with similar challenges.
