Disney offered a glimpse of its upcoming live-action Lilo & Stitch adaptation during D23 on Friday. The film, featuring Maia Kealoha as Lilo Pelekai, is set for a summer 2025 release. Although the exact date wasn't confirmed at D23, Disney’s calendar indicates a potential slot on May 23.
This new version is a reboot of the 2002 animated classic, originally directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois. The story follows Lilo, a 6-year-old girl living in Hawaii, and her older sister Nani, who adopt a blue alien named Stitch. In the live-action film, Stitch will be brought to life through CGI.
The Lilo & Stitch franchise includes several spinoffs such as Stitch! The Movie, Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch, and Leroy & Stitch. Additionally, the TV series Lilo & Stitch: The Series aired on Disney Channel and ABC Kids from 2003 to 2006.
In this new adaptation, Sydney Agudong plays Nani, while Chris Sanders reprises his role as the voice of Stitch. Zach Galifianakis joins the cast as Dr. Jumba Jookiba, the scientist who created Stitch. Billy Magnussen portrays Agent Pleakley, a Galactic Federation agent, and Courtney B. Vance is a social worker overseeing Lilo. Tia Carrere, who voiced Nani in the original film, will appear as Mrs. Kekoa, and Amy Hill, who voiced Mrs. Hasagawa, will play Tūtū. Jason Scott Lee, who played David Kawena in the animated film, also stars.
The film is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, known for Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, with a screenplay by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright. Producers include Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback, with Ryan Halprin, Tom C. Peitzman, and Louie Provost serving as executive producers.
