Presumed Innocent is set for a second season, with Jake Gyllenhaal staying on as an executive producer. Apple TV+ announced the renewal of this legal thriller, which features Gyllenhaal alongside Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, Peter Sarsgaard, and O-T Fagbenle. The upcoming season will introduce a new, suspenseful case, but it remains unclear if the original cast members will return. However, Gyllenhaal will continue as an executive producer along with showrunner David E. Kelley.
Initially launched as an eight-episode limited series in 2022, Presumed Innocent will now transition into an ongoing drama. Despite the possibility that Gyllenhaal may not reprise his role, other characters from the DA's office, like Camp and Fagbenle, might continue to explore and prosecute the new case.
Based on Scott Turow's 1987 novel (which Turow himself co-executive produces), the series centers on Rusty Sabich (played by Gyllenhaal), a chief deputy prosecutor in Chicago who becomes a prime suspect in the murder of his former mistress, Carolyn Polhemus (portrayed by Renate Reinsve). The plot thickens as Rusty's colleagues and his family confront his past actions.
Season one of Presumed Innocent is currently available for streaming, with new episodes releasing every Wednesday. Fans will have to wait until the season finale on July 27 to see if the show deviates from the twist ending familiar from Turow's book or the 1990 film adaptation starring Harrison Ford.
