Get ready for an emotional journey as Superman & Lois returns for its final season. Fans are already aware that Superman (played by Tyler Hoechlin) is on a tragic path, as the show plans to adapt the classic Death of Superman comic storyline from 1992-1993, where Clark meets his end in a fierce battle against Doomsday. Entertainment Weekly offers an exclusive sneak peek at the devastating moment when Lois Lane (portrayed by Elizabeth Tulloch) and their teenage twins, Jordan (played by Alex Garfin) and Jonathan (played by Michael Bishop), find Clark's dead body following the brutal encounter.
According to showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher, the plan to adapt the Death of Superman arc was in place even before the series was confirmed to end. "When season 4 was designated as the last, it felt like the perfect time to dive deep into Doomsday and put our unique spin on the Death of Superman," Helbing remarked. "It's bittersweet that this aligns with the series finale."
The outcome is a series of 10 gripping episodes filled with emotion and unexpected twists, which the creators describe as their finest season to date. "Experiencing the full narrative of the Death of Superman is both meaningful and poignant," Fletcher said. "It serves as a powerful farewell to our hero and his family, as well as these cherished characters."
Helbing pointed out that this storyline could only be done justice after multiple seasons, allowing viewers to truly connect with the characters. "The strength of the original comic comes from years of Superman lore, which adds depth. With 43 episodes showcasing Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and their world, audiences have really developed an attachment."
However, taking down Superman poses a significant challenge—whether through kryptonite or a genetically-engineered Bizarro Superman turned Doomsday. The showrunners embraced the creative challenge of writing themselves "into a corner" and figuring out the next steps.
"This prospect thrilled us and led to intriguing ideas," Fletcher added. "Most of our concepts differ from the original comic, offering a fresh interpretation that integrates all characters and themes of the show. We believe we've created something that is impactful, emotional, and full of surprises. Each episode is designed to thrill viewers while evoking deep feelings."
The highly anticipated final season of Superman & Lois premieres with an epic two-hour event on Monday, October 7, at 8 p.m. ET/PT, exclusively on The CW.
