Discover how David Schwimmer's decision to turn down a role in Men in Black could have changed his career after his iconic role in Friends.

David Schwimmer is best known for his iconic role in Friends, as well as memorable guest spots on shows like Will & Grace and 30 Rock. However, his career path could have been quite different had he made a different choice.

On a recent episode of Cush Jumbo's podcast Origins, Schwimmer discussed turning down a role in Men in Black while filming Friends. Jumbo noted that accepting the role would have significantly altered his filming schedule.

Schwimmer clarified that timing wasn't the main reason for his decision. After working on The Pallbearer with Gwyneth Paltrow, he entered a "three-picture deal" with Miramax, which allowed him to direct his first film.

He planned to direct his theatre company, Chicago's Lookingglass Theater Company, in this project. As pre-production began, his friends left their jobs to participate, but then he received the Men in Black offer.

The timing was unfortunate; his four-month hiatus from Friends coincided perfectly with the filming of Men in Black. Schwimmer described this moment as a "brutal decision," torn between loyalty to his theatre group and a lucrative opportunity.

Looking back, Schwimmer acknowledged that taking the role in Men in Black could have made him a major movie star, given the film's immense success. The sci-fi/action/comedy became one of the highest-grossing films of its time.

Despite second-guessing his choice, Schwimmer has enjoyed a successful career, highlighted by his decade on Friends. He continues to act and recently appeared in the dramedy Little Death, produced by Darren Aronofsky.
