Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie are set to star together in a new adaptation of Emily Brontë's classic novel, Wuthering Heights. Robbie will portray Catherine Earnshaw, a young woman caught between her passionate love for Elordi’s Heathcliff and her desire for social elevation through a marriage with Edgar Linton.
Elordi is collaborating again with writer-director Emerald Fennell, following their work on Saltburn, to take on the role of Heathcliff, known as one of literature's most notorious romantic figures. Robbie will not only star but also produce the film through her company LuckyChap, marking the third partnership between LuckyChap and Fennell, who previously worked together on Promising Young Woman and Saltburn.
Fennell, along with MRC, is currently in pre-production and aims to begin filming in 2025. Details regarding whether the adaptation will stay true to the original 19th-century setting or take a modern approach have yet to be announced.
Wuthering Heights follows the tumultuous love story between Cathy and Heathcliff, the foster son of the Earnshaw family, set against the bleak backdrop of the West Yorkshire moors. Cathy’s conflicting emotions lead her to choose the stability of a marriage with Edgar Linton over her true love, Heathcliff, whose despair ultimately drives him to madness and a haunting obsession with Cathy.
Fennell's previous work, including Saltburn, shows her affinity for the gothic genre, reflecting themes found in Brontë's writing. The novel has seen multiple adaptations over the years, including notable films in 1939 with Laurence Olivier, 1970 with Timothy Dalton, and a 2011 version directed by Andrea Arnold.
With Robbie, Elordi, and Fennell at the helm, this latest adaptation of Wuthering Heights promises to explore the passionate and tragic essence of the story.
