Andrew Garfield recently embraced Stephen Colbert's quirky interest in the infamous demonic carousel horse featured in a promotional image for Garfield’s upcoming film, We Live in Time.
While appearing on The Late Show, Garfield surprised Colbert with a T-shirt that displayed the horse’s unsettling expression and the phrase “what’s the rush.” He humorously announced plans for a three-part documentary series aimed at uncovering the backstory of this peculiar creature that has captivated many. He presented the shirt as a thoughtful gift, recognizing Colbert's enthusiasm for the movie and his admiration for Florence Pugh.
As Colbert revealed the shirt to the audience, he pointed out its text, asking if it connected to the film. Garfield responded that the film holds the key to understanding the reference.
Earlier in the segment, Colbert probed Garfield about the origins of the demon carousel horse and how it ended up in the promotional material. With a laugh, Garfield shared that he first noticed the horse's striking image right before heading into a six-day retreat in Northern California, where he would be without his phone.
Initially, he thought he might be the only one to spot the odd horse, but when he reconnected with the outside world, he was greeted with a slew of memes and Colbert discussing the horse's impact.
The duo even joined forces for a TikTok video, where Garfield pretended to chat before being surprised by Colbert, who appeared with a large cutout of the horse. The Late Show cleverly captioned the clip: “It’s the carousel horse’s world, we’re just living in it.”
In We Live in Time, Garfield takes on the role of Tobias, a man who falls in love with chef Almut (played by Pugh). Their relationship faces numerous trials over the years, especially as they deal with career challenges and Almut's cancer diagnosis.
The film is scheduled for a limited release on October 11 and will expand to a nationwide release on October 18.
