Halle Berry's dedication to her craft is impressive.
In a recent Netflix interview promoting her upcoming film, The Union, the Oscar-winning actress shared some of the serious injuries she's sustained while working on action movies. Over her career, Berry has endured at least 10 broken bones and has been "knocked out three times."
During the interview, Berry detailed her injuries: “I’ve broken my arm, ribs twice — two ribs in one instance and three in another — tailbone, two toes, and my middle finger,” she revealed. Her costar, Mark Wahlberg, was visibly surprised as she listed each injury.
Wahlberg's injuries were less severe by comparison. He joked about having a “torn meniscus, separated shoulder, and a bruised ego.”
Berry also recounted some of the challenging stunts she has performed, such as holding her breath underwater for nearly two and a half minutes while filming Dark Tide (2012). “It felt like death was imminent,” she said of the experience.
The conversation also touched on the skills both actors have developed in Hollywood. Berry mentioned learning jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, kickboxing, taekwondo, and capoeira, while Wahlberg has picked up crochet, ballet, and tango dancing.
Berry acquired several of her injuries while playing a prizefighter in the 2021 film Bruised. Despite the pain from broken ribs, she chose to continue filming rather than halt production, unlike on John Wick 3, where the injury led to a significant production delay.
Fight choreographer Eric Brown praised Berry's intensity and work ethic, noting her unique dedication to her roles.
In The Union, Wahlberg stars as Mike, a construction worker who is unexpectedly recruited into the world of super spies and secret agents by his high school sweetheart, Roxanne (Berry). The film, also featuring J.K. Simmons and Mike Colter, will be available on Netflix starting August 16.
