Idris Elba Continues His Dark Detective Role in 'Luther: The Fallen Sun'

It’s been almost four years since Idris Elba last portrayed John Luther, and his last appearance was far from uplifting. In the 2019 finale of the dark BBC series Luther, his character was arrested and imprisoned by Schenk (played by Dermot Crowley). Now, Elba is set to continue Luther’s story in a new movie, reuniting with director Jamie Payne and series creator Neil Cross.

Elba explains, "Luther has bent the law so much to catch criminals that he ended up in jail. That's where the new story begins—he’s contemplating his future." During the hiatus, Elba starred in several major films, including Fast & Furious: Hobbs and Shaw, The Harder They Fall, and Thor: Love and Thunder.

Elba notes that the film’s development was heavily influenced by the show’s passionate fans. However, new viewers need not worry about having seen all five seasons of the series. Director Payne assures that while the film continues some elements from the show, it also stands alone with its own storyline. “You can watch the film without having seen the series, but it’s designed so that fans can easily go back and binge-watch the show if they want,” Payne adds.

The film delves into Luther’s character—dedicated, troubled, and haunted. Despite the introduction of new characters played by Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis, Luther’s core motivations remain unchanged. Elba describes Luther as "haunted" by past actions and unresolved cases, which drives him throughout the film.

Payne also notes that the film reflects on contemporary themes of vulnerability and fear, especially in light of recent global events that have made people feel more exposed and introspective.

The plot kicks off with an unresolved case from Luther’s past reappearing, pulling him back into action. Elba reveals, "An old case he worked on resurfaces, and John can’t resist getting involved."

Luther: The Fallen Sun is set to premiere on Netflix in March 2023.
