John Milhiser recently recounted his experience of receiving creative support from Lady Gaga during his time on Saturday Night Live. To celebrate the show’s 50th season and Gaga's new album, Harlequin, he shared memories from their collaboration in 2013.
Milhiser explained on Instagram that he had a solo sketch titled "4th Grade Talent Show," which he decided to pitch to Gaga when he learned she would host. In this sketch, they portrayed enthusiastic parents mimicking their daughter's outrageous dance moves.
He admired Gaga, noting she enjoyed the sketch he co-wrote with Ken Tola and James Anderson. Before the table read, Gaga invited him to her office to rehearse the choreography, leading to the sketch being selected to air.
However, Lorne Michaels, the show's creator, had reservations about Milhiser's costume. He intended to wear a mustache and wig, but Michaels wanted him to be recognizable to the audience. They kept the costume for the dress rehearsal, which went well.
A moment of disappointment occurred when Milhiser didn’t see the sketch on the lineup during a pre-show meeting. Gaga reassured him that she had advocated for it, and soon after, their sketch was added to the show.
Although they performed the sketch, Michaels ultimately decided to remove the mustache and wig. Just before going live, Gaga squeezed Milhiser’s hand, and he shared that he was a "little Monster," which delighted her.
Milhiser concluded with heartfelt congratulations to SNL and expressed his love for the show, highlighting his gratitude toward Lorne Michaels for his support. As the second openly gay cast member, he made a significant impact during his brief time on SNL, showcasing memorable impressions and continuing to engage with the comedy scene in various series.
