Can you feel the excitement? Team Avatar has officially found its Earthbender! During the Netflix Geeked Week fan event in Atlanta, it was announced that Miya Cech will join the cast as Toph, a much-loved character from the original Nickelodeon animated series, and a highly anticipated addition to the live-action adaptation.
In the animated series, Toph Beifong is introduced as a blind Earthbender who perceives her surroundings through vibrations in the ground. Despite appearing to be a privileged young girl, she is actually the most talented Earthbender of her generation and is credited with inventing Metalbending.
Netflix has also confirmed that filming for season 2 has officially begun, with Toph playing a pivotal role in Aang's journey, as portrayed by Gordon Cormier. A teaser video gives a sneak peek of Toph, showing her feet gliding over the earth before she powerfully strikes the ground to summon the element.
Cech joins a talented cast that includes Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as her brother Sokka, Dallas Liu as Zuko, Elizabeth Yu as Azula, Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, among others.
Following the premiere of season 2 in February, Netflix has renewed the series for two additional seasons to complete the adaptation. However, Albert Kim, who led season 1, will not return for the final two seasons. Instead, co-executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani will take on the role of showrunners.
Kim had previously mentioned that there will be a time jump between seasons 1 and 2 to account for the aging of the young actors. Additionally, a post-credits scene in the season finale hinted at Sozin's Comet, a significant plot element from the animated series.
