Former BBC presenter Huw Edwards charged with making indecent images of children; faces court. Accused of sharing explicit images on WhatsApp.

Huw Edwards, the former BBC News presenter, has been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children, according to London's Metropolitan Police. The charges involve images allegedly shared via WhatsApp, with the offenses occurring between December 2020 and April 2022. Edwards was arrested on November 8, 2023, and charged on June 26, 2024, following authorization from the Crown Prosecution Service.

The 62-year-old faces allegations of possessing six category A images (the most serious classification), twelve category B images, and nineteen category C photos on WhatsApp. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of up to 10 years. Edwards is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, and the public is advised against publishing any information that might affect the court proceedings.

Edwards resigned from his role at the BBC in late April after a distinguished 40-year career as one of the most prominent figures in British television news. The BBC's recent annual report highlighted that Edwards was among the top earners, with a salary between £475,000 and £479,999 for the fiscal year April 2023 to March 2024.
