Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen (known for 12 Years a Slave) has collaborated with four-time Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan (from Little Women directed by Greta Gerwig) for the upcoming Apple Originals film titled Blitz, set to release in November.
Written and directed by McQueen, the story centers on George, a 9-year-old boy portrayed by Elliott Heffernan, living in World War II London. His mother, Rita (played by Ronan), sends him to the safety of the English countryside. However, George is determined to return to his home in East London to reunite with his mother and grandfather Gerald (played by Paul Weller). This journey leads him into significant danger, while Rita desperately searches for her son.
The film also features a talented cast, including Harris Dickinson, Benjamin Clementine, Kathy Burke, Stephen Graham, Leigh Gill, Mica Ricketts, CJ Beckford, Alex Jennings, Joshua McGuire, Hayley Squires, Erin Kellyman, and Sally Messham.
Blitz marks McQueen's first full-length narrative film since 2018's Widows. He has remained active with acclaimed limited series such as Small Axe (2020) and Uprising (2021), as well as the 2023 documentary Occupied City.
Meanwhile, Ronan received her fourth Oscar nomination for Little Women (2019) and has appeared in recent films like The French Dispatch (2021), See How They Run (2022), Foe (2023), and starred in The Outrun, based on Amy Liptrot's memoir.
Blitz will premiere in select theaters on November 1 before being available on Apple TV+ starting November 22. A trailer for the film is available for viewing below.
