Tiger Woods misses cut at Open Championship, but vows to return for 2025. Despite struggles, he promises to keep competing and chase future victories.

Tiger Woods has exited the Open Championship early but promises to return for the 2025 event. After a second-round score of six-over 77 at Royal Troon, Woods ended up 14-over par overall, missing the cut.

This result ties Woods’ highest 36-hole score in his major career, matching his performance at the US Open in 2015. Woods, who had previously missed three consecutive cuts at the major tournaments that year, struggled throughout his rounds. Despite improving from an opening 79, he fell short of the top-70 cut line.

Woods escapes the rough.

Woods expressed his frustration, noting he was “fighting it pretty much all day,” and had difficulty getting close to the pin to make birdies, resulting in several bogeys. Despite this, the crowd gave him a standing ovation as he finished his rounds with a par.

The 15-time major champion assured fans that this won't be his last Open. Qualified automatically due to his victories in 2000, 2005, and 2006, Woods confirmed he will compete in the 2025 event at Royal Portrush. He emphasized his commitment to play as long as he believes he can win, rejecting suggestions of retirement from former world No. 2 Colin Montgomerie.Woods left himself with too much to do after a difficult opening round.

This year marks Woods’ first time competing in all four majors since his 2021 car crash. Despite feeling better physically, he has only played in five official events in 2024. Woods admitted that he hasn’t been as sharp as needed and struggled to find his game, leading to higher scores.

Xander Schauffele, who played alongside Woods and won the PGA Championship in May, sympathized with Woods’ challenges, acknowledging the difficulties of maintaining high-level performance while dealing with physical limitations.
