Danielle Fishel, who played Topanga on Boy Meets World, recently shared that she questions whether her character and Ben Savage's Cory should have tied the knot on the show.
In a recent episode of the re-watch podcast Pod Meets World, co-hosted by Fishel, Rider Strong, and Will Friedle, Fishel revealed that if she could change one thing about the series, it would be to skip the marriage between Cory and Topanga. The episode, aptly named "Fans Meet World," featured fans asking the cast about potential changes they’d make to the show.
Fishel reflected that the high school sweethearts’ marriage, which occurred in the seventh season after Topanga's proposal in the fifth season's finale, might not have been the best move. “I’d keep the proposal,” she said, “but maybe we should have skipped the wedding and explored their relationship without the added pressure of being married. We could have saved the marriage for later in the series.”
Her co-hosts, Strong and Friedle, were surprised by this take, but Fishel stood by her opinion. She admitted that after the marriage, the show struggled to find compelling new challenges for their characters. “It felt like once we were married, the stakes had to be raised artificially,” Fishel noted. “I think we could have achieved more drama and growth without jumping straight into marriage.”
Fishel's comments resonate with her earlier statements at 90s Con, where she mentioned that marrying right out of high school often isn’t the best idea, even though some couples make it work.
Boy Meets World aired on ABC from 1993 to 2000, spanning seven seasons. Despite Fishel’s reservations, Cory and Topanga’s journey continued in the Disney Channel reboot, Girl Meets World, which picked up their story 15 years later as they navigated parenthood together.
